Call for Proposals Form - UMHC 2023
The Upper Midwest Honors Council Conference will be held in-person on March 30-April 1, 2023 at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, IA.
School and social life. Theory and praxis. Self and other. Honors and everything else.
This year’s UMHC conference theme—”Striking a Balance”—explores the challenges that Honors Students face trying to keep everything in their hectic and high-achieving lives perfectly in balance. What does it mean to live a “well-balanced life”? How do students and faculty balance the sometimes-competing goals of honors programs, like scholarship, service, and community? What can we do to support each other when things feel dangerously out of balance?
Proposals that engage this conference theme—however you interpret it—are welcome and encouraged, but by no means required!
Please read the descriptions of the presentation categories below carefully. You will be asked to select a category and provide the following: 1) a presentation title
2) a 50-word description for the conference program
3) a 200 word abstract for the selection process
The deadline for proposal submissions for UMHC 2023 is Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Presenters will be notified of their acceptance by March 17, 2023.

INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATIONS (INCLUDES BOTH SCHOLARLY/ACADEMIC AND CREATIVE WORK)
Individual research presentation sessions will feature students, faculty, and staff given up to 20 minutes to present their research or creative activity. A Q & A will follow each presentation and be within the given time. Presentations are not required to relate to the conference theme. Visuals are welcome.
PANELS, WORKSHOPS, AND ROUNDTABLES
Presenters/facilitators will have two options for Panel, Workshop, and Roundtable proposals: a "full session" of eighty minutes or a "half session" of forty minutes. Please indicate your preference below.
PANELS
These sessions are formatted to stimulate debate and engage in lively discussions between panelists or panelists and conference participants. Presenters are primarily viewed as discussion facilitators and should limit their own remarks.
WORKSHOPS
Workshops should cover topics of general interest related to Honors education. Workshops can be proposed by individuals or teams. Workshops should be interactive. Leaders should frame the issue or problem to be solved and should have clearly stated objectives for the session and the activities. Activities should encourage participants to see issues from different perspectives and generate ideas to bring back to the larger group. Faculty, staff, and students are all invited to submit for this category.
ROUNDTABLES
Roundtables will feature one presenter (or one group of presenters) leading a collaborative exchange of information and resources. The format of roundtable discussions will be lively, interactive discourse among leaders and participants, not lecture or panel-style delivery. Presenters should regard themselves primarily as facilitators and limit their own remarks to 10 minutes or less in order to focus on questions and conversations with participants. Roundtable topics can relate to the conference theme or Honors education more broadly. Faculty, staff, and students are all invited to submit for this category.
