We are writing to offer your members an opportunity to show their photos in an exhibition we are developing for the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University.
The exhibition: Appalachia and Yemen: Living in Mountain Spaces. I, Dr. Barbara J. Michael (UNC Wilmington) and Dr. Rebecca Fletcher (East Tennessee State University), are preparing the exhibition that will open April 1, 2023 and will be up until July 31, 2024.
We have access to archival photos of the “early days” of life in Appalachia. We are soliciting photographs of present-day Appalachia. The photographs we are looking for will portray life in Appalachia in the following topic categories:
1. Geography: Mountain landscapes, and land use, local building materials
2. Water Sources: Lakes, reservoirs, springs, wells, streams
3. Agriculture: Crop fields, orchards, vineyards, tobacco, Christmas tree farms, etc. Also, people engaged in farm work, dairying, cheese making, sorghum pressing/processing, etc.
4. Farm or dairy equipment (in use).
5. Animal husbandry: Sheep, chickens, pigs (not “industrial” animal raising)
6. Cash crops: Tobacco, whiskey, honey, etc.
7. Fishing: For household or recreational
8. Local markets for agricultural products or crafts: Farmer’s markets, roadside stands, shops.
9. Crafts and Craftsmen: Any craft indigenous or traditional in Appalachia, such as basketmaking, pottery, carving, weaving, quilt making, outsider art. [Cherokee baskets, tobacco baskets, egg baskets, for ex.)
10. Activities: Games, Dancing, etc.
11. Traditional Medicine, Herbalists.
Photos should be submitted for consideration by March 1, 2024.
Photographers will receive notice of acceptance of their photos by March 5, 2024.
Since photos will be different sizes, according to available wall space, they will be printed and framed by the Reece Museum.
