Lawson State Community College is pleased to announce the 2026 launch of its Natural Gas Utility Worker training course. This program runs for approximately 8 weeks, with the next available class scheduled for June 8 – July 31, 2026.
This program provides hands-on training in trenching equipment operation, skid steer loader operation, excavator operation, CDL Class A licensure preparation, fundamentals of pipe installation and repair, OSHA 10 safety training, and CPR certification.
Program Eligibility Requirements and Essential Job Functions:·
- Class meets Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., for approximately 8 weeks. Classes may be held at both Lawson State Community College campuses (Besser and Birmingham)
- Must be 18 years of age at the time of application and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent 528
- Must submit to drug screening
- Must be able to lift equipment weighing 50 pounds or more
- Applicants must provide proof of an ACT score of 18 or higher within the past three years. Applicants who have not taken the ACT, or who do not meet the minimum score requirement, must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). A TABE level M or higher is required in both Math and Reading for program consideration
- Must be eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements include a physical examination prior to issuance of a Commercial Learner’s Permit. Potential disqualifying conditions may include, but are not limited to: epilepsy, kidney disease, narcolepsy or sleep apnea, color blindness, monocular vision, inability to hear sounds at 40 decibels or lower, heart disease or hypertension, severe respiratory conditions, loss of limb function, insulin-dependent diabetes, congestive heart failure, pacemakers, orthopedic or vascular disease, and certain psychiatric disorders
- Must be able to obtain CPR certification
- Must be able to obtain OSHA 10 Safety certification
Program Cost
- Program cost is $3,400 plus the cost of required work boots
- Financial assistance is available for qualifying applicants
